THE PARRISH ART MUSEUM

On Saturday, October 25, from 7 to 11 p.m., the Parrish Art Museum presents Project Blow-Up. This event includes live music, a one-night only art installation by local artists, snacks, complimentary drinks, and entrance to the galleries at night and is $5 for admission.

Project Blow-Up will feature a lineup of East End musicians, including alternative-funk band Farmer's Tan Convention, who will play on the steps of the Museum to kick off the party. Local hip-hop artists ZONASEIS, Dashah, Slayback, and Soul-A-Flex will freestyle in the concert hall, against the backdrop of the artist installation Darkroom. Throughout the night DJ Dave will be on hand spinning hip-hop and dance tracks to keep the crowd moving.

Darkroom, a one-night-only installation comprised of black and white artwork of every medium, is inspired by the current Parrish exhibition, Modern Photographs: The Machine, The Body and The City- Selections from the Charles Cowles Collection. More than 20 young artists, including participants from Long Island art collectives, ARTS4 of Sag Harbor, Bonac Tonic of East Hampton and FRESH of Port Jefferson, will create the works based on the three themes of the exhibition and will be shown under red darkroom-like lighting.

For the second year successive, Arts 4 Collective joins in the Harborfest celebrations with their Annual Secret Whale Show, running September 13 - 14 at The Whaling Museum, 200 Main Street, Sag Harbor.

This Art Extravaganza will include Visual Art forms of all kinds, live acoustic performances, and benefit booths. Artists working in the fields of painting, sculpture, installation, photography, printmaking, design, jewelry and craft will come together to display their unique talents. In accordance with their philosophy of arts advocacy and enthusiasm for the creative processes, the Collective will also have a collaborative project set up for the public to join in and participate in creating!

The event begins on Saturday the 13th, with an opening reception from 6 - 9 p.m. Food and beverages will be served, courtesy of our generous sponsors, including the Southampton Brewery, The Dockside Bar & Grill and B.B. Balsam. Live acoustic performances will begin at 7 p.m., and include acts such as The Supernaturals and Tres Amigos. Fundraising booths will be set up, and may include Save Sag Harbor and YARD.

Exhibiting artists include Danielle Lobosco, Bethany Peters, Travis King, Hunter Herrick, Matthew Brophy, Ashley Hildreth, Jacqueline Dowling, Jason Green, Marshall Moran, Ashley Gardiner, Constance Sepulveda, Molly Weiss, Laura Miller, Dylan Perez, Jacqueline Pizza and Kein Ziemkiewicz.

This event is open to the public and admission is free, with a $5 suggested donation. Portions of the proceeds will go to Save Sag Harbor, YARD and The Whaling Museum. Come out and support our local causes and artists!

In accordance with their philosophy of arts advocacy and enthusiasm for the creative processes, Arts 4 Collective has teamed up LABL, a street fashion boutique, new to the East End fashion scene. LABL has already hosted Exhibitions of Arts 4 since their Grand Opening, and this weekend will will display the works of two of the Collective's very talented and unique individuals, Jacqueline Dowling and Jason Green.

Jason Green has been shooting photos for over 15 years. Recently, he stumbled upon a collection of photos from his grandfather, Allen R. Rosenberg, taken throughout the years between 1918 and 1950. With over 600 photos ranging in medium format, to a larger 4.3 inch to 5.3 inch negative which no longer exists, Jason has been given the opportunity to enlarge these photos, archive them, and show them to the public for the first time. This series of photos at LABL is just a scratch on the surface of Mr. Rosenberg's work. Jason has chosen these photos to best fit the atmosphere of an Urban clothing store targeting a younger crowd. Many are of friends and family and sometimes just strangers whom Mr. Rosenberg came across. As viewers will see, Mr. Rosenberg boasted a style of capturing the fashion and usually un-candid portrait of war-time and post war-time America.
Jacqueline M. Dowling is a recent graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she studied film and finished with her award-winning experimental film "Girl in a Wedding Dress". Her other focus , which will be displayed at the exhibit, is photomanipulation. She captures patterns, textures, and surfaces of decaying urban environments and uses them as her canvas to create surreal, dark underworlds that explore the human psyche. She is currently working hard on her art and various jobs to support a future trip to the Far East in search of new textures and inspiring experiences.
An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, August 15th from 6 – 8 p.m. at LABL 78 Main St. (under Java Nation), Sag Harbor, NY. Frozen treats and cold beverages will be served. The community is invited to check out their newest family business LABL, as well as view two particularly skilled, emerging artists whose complimentary media creates an exciting atmosphere. After exhibiting last August in a well received group show produced by his friend, curator Tripoli Patterson, at Collette’s Antique Barn, in Southampton, Herbie Fletcher returns to the Hamptons this week to exhibit recent works in a solo show entitled, The Rectangle: A Herbie Fletcher Exhibition. Curator Tripoli Patterson’s new Bridgehampton location, Collette Gallery of Bridgehampton, located just behind the old Bull’s Head Inn on Montauk Hwy, is a perfect spot to showcase Mr. Fletcher’s exciting title piece.

Being the creative man that he is, Herbie has a way of seeing art in everything and using what is at hand to create his masterpieces. A Pipeline veteran and a true innovator, Herbie Fletcher, known by all surfers, is like a father to many North Shore surf heroes of today. When asked for their broken boards by the surf legend, local Pipeliners such as three-time world champion, Andy Irons, international superstar Bruce Irons, long board champion Bonga Perkins, and Herbie’s son, Nathan Fletcher, happily complied. Herbie uses them to create dramatic and energized sculptures, which he calls, “Rectangles.”

Also on exhibit, will be some of Mr. Fletcher’s large, resined photographs, printed on canvas. Combining important aspects of his life — documentation and shaping surfboards — Herbie brings forth a beauty of his own making that demonstrates his undeniable desire to create.

The show’s opening reception will be on Saturday, August 9th, from 5 to 8 pm at The Collette Gallery of Bridgehampton, 2546 Montauk Hwy, Bridgehampton, NY, 11932. The show will be on exhibit through August 25th, 2008, and will be open to the public for viewing from 10 am- 6 pm, seven days a week.

On the night of the opening, Saturday, August 9th, One Ocean, a restaurant located at 1 Ocean Road, in Bridgehampton, will be hosting a prix fixe dinner and drink specials for the artist and friends until eleven pm. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1968, Bonilla has always had a niche for painting and his passion and brilliant sense of color and form is vividly demonstrated in this exhibit which include some of his most recent works. Bonilla has shown extensively in Puerto Rico and, since 2003, his work has been exhibited in The Museum of the Americas in Miami, The Coconut Grove Convention Center, two museums in the Dominican Republic, as well as group shows in Philadelphia and Guadalupe. Now this collection of striking oils on canvas comes to the Hamptons for the first time.

In the wake of several successful and compelling exhibitions on the South Fork, Arts 4 Bonac Tonic (A4BT), in conjunction with Clovis Point Winery of Jamesport, is proud to present Clovis Point Toasts the Artists: Arts 4 Bonac Tonic Part II. Curated by members of A4BT, this sequel, dynamic show will highlight a new, fresh batch of emerging East End artists, featuring individuals who’s works comprehensively include a vast range of styles, mediums and disciplines, and demonstrate their diverse backgrounds.

Under the umbrella of A4BT, new artists exhibiting include Anna Atanasova, Joseph Bartolotto, Mia Berg, Zoe Pennebaker-Breen, Katharine Neva Dobbins, Darlene Duchatelier, Yong Jo Ji, Peter Levine, Cynthia Loewen, Cristen Motty, Clayton Orehek, and Heather Tankersley. Through various Art forms, these gifted artists bring an exciting melange of tradition and experience to this subsequent exhibit.

A4BT members displaying works include Matthew Brophy, Amy Distler, Jacqueline M. Dowling, Ashley Gardiner, Scott Gibbons, Jason Green, Grant Haffner, Elliot Hawkins, Ashley Hildreth, Hunter Herrick, Elizabeth Karsch, Danielle Lobosco, Gary Lovelace, Sara Marchese, Bethany Peters, Justin Smith and Molly M. Weiss.

Hosting the show is Clovis Point, a newly established winery situated on eight acres of beautiful North Fork farmland. Clovis has won 5 medals in the prestigious 2007 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, which was open to commercial wineries from the United States, Canada, and all wine-producing countries. Along with the artists involved, the winery has been very excited about supporting local art and showcasing emerging talent. General Manager Carmela Paciullo has plans for wine tasting for the entire afternoon as well as a "meet and greeting of the artists" during the opening reception.

The exhibition will run from April 11th through May 15th, with opening reception on Sunday, April 13th from 2 - 5pm. Food and wine will be served, and there will be plenty of space for both wine and art enthusiasts alike. The winery is located at 1935 Main Road, Jamesport. A4BT has been working together towards creating new movement; to establish a family of young artists, and to support contemporary artists working out here on the East End. The Arts 4, based out of Sag Harbor, have been working together for the past year, while Bonac Tonic has been a staple of the art scene in The Springs and East Hampton for the past three years. In 2008, we joined forces to form A4BT.

"This fifth edition of the PooL Art Fair is slated for March 28-30 at the Hotel Chelsea. Focusing largely on artists that do not have representation in art galleries, the fair's ambition is to create a meeting ground for artists. PooL is the successor to the acclaimed New York Independent Art Fair (November 2000), a groundbreaking exhibition that attracted thousands of US and international visitors. The Controlled “Art Attack” Of Emerging Artist Travis King

Travis King’s "Juxtapose", a semi-abstract acrylic design of a torso in yoga pose, part of the Artist Alliance of East of Hampton “Serenity” exhibit at East Hampton Town Hall, hardly prepares a viewer for what is on fuller display at the Travis King Studio in Springs. It was the best-selling novelist Richard (“Lush Life”) Price who noted recently that ‘making it’ is the point at which the hyphens disappear. So for Travis King, “Local, Licensed, and Insured” interior designer-home renovator-cabinet maker-fine artist, the last designation is the one to watch these days.

Long a fixture on the East Hampton scene, C.E. King & Sons (canvas awnings and marine boat covers), in operation for the last 60 years, co-exists with Travis King Studio - it’s all in the family where the owner concentrates on “cabinetry, built-ins and home renovation.” Although King has a degree in furniture design from the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia, he always loved to paint and sculpt, and the current exhibit clearly shows the common denominators in all his work: a passion for detail, a rigorous geometric design sense, a witty, even defiant, sense of not wanting to be boxed in – even by his own Mondrian-like paintings, and humor. The 18 “Art Attack” pieces on display – oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and board, conte, charcoal, and ink dot drawings, mixed paper collage - are listed on a checklist as “His Majesty’s Art Collection: Travis King.” Innovation reigns and includes furniture and sculpture pieces set around the large shop that also shows off King’s imaginative talent.

Although King’s day job continues to be custom designing (concept, creation, installation) for private and commercial clients in the Hamptons and Manhattan, his quirky Springs studio integrates his various artistic lives. There is a wood column section left over from a client that is clapped onto a wall, a small steel sculpture of a surfer rests on the floor near a lean-to of surfboards, a sleek box-design cabinet unit in white with bold black and red interiors sits across from an object d’art rough-wood, three-legged chair. The chair was constructed from a single piece of drift wood King and his partner, Ann Carmody, found on Gerard Drive, a testimony to their support of going green. You’ll also notice that works in oil and acrylic and ink dots are propped up near a mahogany Sail Chair (“really comfortable,” Ann offers) designed with Dacron sail cloth and grommet rigging on the back.

The show is arranged not by chronology, subject matter, genre or style but with an eye to encourage appreciation of King’s diversity. “Art Attack” is King’s first solo and the first time the studio is exhibiting fine art. Not all the pieces, especially those not formally noted in the show, may remain where they are, but visitors are unlikely to miss them. There’s an early surrealist “Tool Box,” with drill watercolor, a figure standing in a socket, and an expressionist rendering in oil of a photo King took of his daughter’s face, featuring an extended Popsicle blue tongue. Scattered throughout the room are also a couple of unusual wood sculptures - an elongated man with hoop earrings, a carved tree branch, and a wooden wheel device used to count and mark the catch of the day - all evidence of King’s playful minimalism, but it is the acrylic and oil abstracts that most exemplify King’s intricate design sense of interlocking forms and color.

“Dollparts,” a colorful acrylic on board configuration of free-form geometric shapes, amazingly seems to recompose itself into four or five differently conjoined torsos, depending on point of view. This, and “Manhattan”, a conte drawing in brown, black, white and gray that subtly jig-saw shapes into an eye catching composition set in a rough wood frame (check out the almost-hidden head and small figure), shows King’s sure hand in integrating line, form and color. Nothing wasted and nothing arbitrary. Careful delineation and resolution of perspective are particularly apparent as well in King’s homage to Ayn Rand, in drawings called “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged.”

The ink-dots on paper (“Self-Portrait: Artist with Hair”, “a Muse.” “Tupac.” “Westhampton Beach.” and “Acabonac Harbor”) all executed from photos, show King’s ability to get down likenesses, as well as his determination not to be typecast: dot technique, from picture to picture, varies in size, spacing and hue.

Visitors picking up on the Easter Saturday opening debut will not be surprised at seeing several iconic pieces, including “Madonna, Like a Virgin,” a collage made from scraps of different kinds, colors and textures of paper, a not untypical composition that only seems symmetrical. Similarly, “Doublecross.” oil and marker on board, features a sly off-centering box design in black, red, white and spray-gun gray. Arguably, the most representative and effective of King’s newer pieces are the Dutch-inspired modernist, linear, punningly allusive graphic designs with lettering – “Oorlog”, “Ausgang: Rear Entry”, and “Amsterdam” where less is more - and, on closer inspection, even more.

Furniture Artist Opens Studio

Travis King of Springs is an interior designer, furnishing installer and fine artist all in one. With a grandfather who founded the prominent awning company C.E. King & Sons (whose clientele once included Springs neighbor Jackson Pollock), Mr. King is perpetuating the family legacy, forging his own artistic path through the channel of contemporary interior furnishing.
“I came to realize that I love working with my hands,” he said, commenting on his attitude toward the various artistic modes he was contemplating as a teenager. “I did, after all, grow up working on upholsteries and covers in the family canvas shop.”
Mr. King has since developed a reputation for his innovative, hand-crafted furniture, which he has been designing and installing in the Hamptons for more than three years. East Enders can view the large breadth of his furniture styles and fine art works at Mr. King’s grand opening exhibit at his Washington Avenue studio in Springs on March 22, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The exhibit can thereafter be seen by individual appointment.
Mr. King graduated from the reputed Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia with a degree in furniture design. There, among other projects, he worked on a series of chairs in the style of Olympic sailing boats. “The assignment was to design a piece of furniture inspired by the Olympics, which took place in Atlanta that year,” he explained. “So, the fabric we used was actual sailcloth.” The students combined the cloth with stainless steel to form the back of the chair into a mast-like shape.
Immediately after graduation from college, he moved back to Springs, where he worked on large-scale projects under the supervision of custom cabinetmakers for several years. His career got a jump-start when a large bedroom vanity unit he built for a residence on Meadow Lane in Southampton appeared in a 1999 June-July issue of Elle Décor magazine. This unit consists of a custom-designed queen bed ensemble that features a slick, wood-slat wall supporting a delicately cushioned backrest, two modern-style bedside tables, and, behind the unit, a symmetrical set of clothing drawers with discrete handles integrated into two dresser units.
Increasingly recognized for such original designs, Mr. King opened his own studio in a spacious 2,000-square-foot warehouse-like building in 2004 on Washington Avenue, just off Three Mile Harbor Road. “I like working at my own pace and being tucked away,” he explained, adding that his proximity to Manhattan is a plus.
When asked what makes his work distinguishable from that of other competent East End interior designers, Mr. King points to his obsession with detail and his quest for perfection.
“I’m no factory,” he commented. “Everything that leaves my shop is custom made by me.”
His multifaceted abilities—from designing to building to installing—are what sets him apart.
“I design [a furniture piece] from the drawing and idea stage, then build and create it, then install it,” he said. “In other words, I work from concept to creation, from start to finish,” adding that he uses the highest quality materials, which he purchases on demand from specialty building shops.
Regularly commissioned by prominent Manhattan-based designers such as Fox Nahem and Zung Design, Mr. King builds a wide array of domestic furnishings for East End homeowners and restaurateurs. To date, Mr. King says, 90 percent of his clients have come through word of mouth and that the majority of them “know what they want and are easy to work for.”
Mr. King takes on a wide variety of projects, ranging from intimate bathroom/bedroom vanities to large structures for entertainment centers. Though his specialty is modern contemporary design, Mr. King has made reproductions of antique furniture on request as well as post-modern and modern pieces. He described the multistep process of his job: “I normally start out with 10 sketches, then make three derivative ones based on those, then 10 more, and finally attain a design-shop drawing, which I use to build the piece.”
One of Mr. King’s most ambitious East End projects was the design and construction of a media center/desk unit for a physically challenged customer who worked at home. The interior designer scrupulously examined the area and provided his client with several drawings before building, painting, and installing the unit. Explaining his method of custom design, he said, “the desk unit was designed high enough to allow his wheelchair to fit underneath.” He also assisted in setting up the client’s printer, fax machine, wireless router and DVD player behind a door to keep them out of sight.
Whenever he has a moment to spare from his furnishing projects, Mr. King resorts to his other favorite artistic endeavor: painting. Working from scratch with blank slates of plain, cotton fabric, Mr. King creates cubist oil on canvas works and pointillist profile sketches of human figures.
“I am a perfectionist with my art as much as I am with my furnishing work,” he said, stressing his fondness for “working with layers.” His colorful, shape-oriented acrylic canvas work “Juxtapose” is currently on view in the “Serenity” exhibit in East Hampton Town Hall until May 2.
Mr. King is enthusiastic about hosting the opening at his Springs studio, in which several of his recent interior design pieces and fine art works will be exhibited.
“It’s going to be as much of an introduction to the shop and studio as it is an exhibiting of my finished pieces,” said the artist, who wishes to demonstrate “the work that goes into making my products.” On display will be several of his commissioned furniture pieces in various stages of completion, including a pine antique-style entertainment center, plywood cabinets meant for a builtin closet unit, a plywood office desk, and a stained maple kitchen island.
The exhibit also features his completed oil, acrylic, and ink-dot pieces, including his brand new “Doublecross,” an oil painting on plywood that experiments with the theme of the cross and incorporates a crucifixion at the center.

Ashawagh Hall Hosts Joint Arts4-BonacTonic Exhibit

Springs - Ashawagh Hall was the setting on Saturday, March 15, for the collaborative efforts of two art groups, Arts4 and Bonac Tonic. The “And Now For Something Totally Awesome” show, which ran from March 14 through March 16, featured the works of 12 Bonac Tonic artists, and 18 Arts4 artists, or collectively, Arts4BonacTonic.

On Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, these two groups held their first collaborative exhibition on the South Fork, also at Ashawagh Hall, and Saturday’s opening represented what both groups believe to be a “new young birth of an artistic movement.”

Amid the works of both seasoned and emerging artists this show reflected a diversity of talented individuals who encompassed “an extensive range of backgrounds, traditions, styles, mediums and disciplines.”

Most of the participating artists were able to exhibit more than one piece and a fortunate few had works sporting little red dots, such as Sag Harbor resident, Oliver Peterson, who “reveres the bucolic nature of the area.” Peterson titles each piece “to grant the viewer a frame of reference from which to decode individual meaning.”

Burt Van Deusen was just congratulating the new owner of his work “Slipping To Pink” just as his photo was being taken. Van Deusen “creates emotionally charged driven landscapes with oil based cloud paintings” which was obviously appreciated by his newest patron. Bethany Peters' work "Of Walking and Turtles" also spotted a red dot, as well as Bruce Milne.

Given the crowd in attendance and the numerous sponsors of this art exhibition, it was evident that there is a mass appreciation of the talents of these artists, including, but limited to, the delightful “Bottle Cap Boy” and “Bottle Cap Girl” mixed media work of Trish Franey; the interesting and revealing photograph “Bulova Courtyard” by artist Bruce Milne who works in both architectural and photographic arts; the tactile rawness of the sculpture “Untitled Box” by Hunter Herrick; and the imaginary world explored by Peter Ngo in his painting “The Desert Hoppers,” as well as expressive moving thick and thin lines in the human forms drawn by Linda Capello, an inductee of The National Association of Women Artists.

Gideon Stein of the Gideon Stein Gallery in Bridgehampton, who opened his gallery in the summer of 2007, and is an accomplished artist and musician, expressed his appreciation “at the warm reception and support young artists are receiving on the East End.”

There appeared to be as many artists in attendance as there were exhibiting in the show, among them David Slater, Gerry Giliberti, and Kris Warrenburg. That is always a compliment to any artist, and compliments should abound to these participating artists and their collaborative efforts.

Right on the heels of one of their most successful shows to-date, Arts 4 and Bonac Tonic bring you their latest show "and now for something totally awesome!" an opportunity for A4BT members to step back to the peripheries and put the spotlight on several accomplished and acclaimed local artists. Featured artists include Linda Capello, John Phillip Capello, Daria Deshuk, Patrick Dintino, Trish Franey, Dennis Leri, Peter Levine, Bruce Milne, Peter Ngo, Oliver Peterson, Burt Van Deusen and Rian White. This dynamic and powerful show will showcase talented individuals who encompass an extensive range of backgrounds, traditions, styles, mediums and disciplines.

An inductee of The National Association of Women Artists, Sag Harbor's Linda Capello speaks of her work as "a constant exploration of the human form. My 'Art' language of choice is charcoal," she says, "the graceful, powerful, thick and thin of the line, so profoundly expressive. I look for the immediacy in the pose, the slight shift in the hip or curve of the neck before the model settles. I look to capture movement."
John Phillip Capello, a sculptor from Sag Harbor, won the award for "Best in Sculpture" at the 2007 Guild Hall Member's Show. "Direct carving is accomplished by chipping, scraping, fracturing, flaking or pulverizing the stone to be removed," John articulates. "I make no drawing beforehand, I work directly on the stone- it speaks to me."
Artist Daria Deschuk will be exhibiting two paintings that reflect the occurring change in her surrounding atmosphere. Both works reveal an evolution of practice, a shift in the environment from which she draws her inspiration, and convey a special vision of Spring in Bridgehampton.
For Dennis Leri, the distinct nature of a medium dictates technique and demands exploration. "The sense of immediacy and oneness of purpose with the material(s) takes me on a joyful journey of chance discoveries," he says. Mr. Leri has been exhibiting locally for over a decade, and has studied at the National Academy School of Fine Art, the Art Students League, the Brooklyn Museum Art School and The Sculpture Center. Recently, his emphasis has shifted to creating works larger in scale, to be displayed outdoors.
Burt Van Deusen creates emotionally driven landscapes that convey an ongoing battle he fights everyday with his canvas. Some are easy to win, but some seem impossible and ideas can get out of control quickly. Mr. Van Deusen's oil based cloud paintings capture these moments. The work is something akin to life, and life is not perfect.
Springs native Rian White, known for his travel photography, has shifted his focus and is now capturing his philosophical statements through colorful scribble drawings on paper, which he will be presenting.
Sag Harbor resident Oliver Peterson reveres the bucolic nature of the area, but finds inspiration in the unlikeliest of places. Graffiti, structural decay, the pop zeitgeist, literature, politics, history, and his personal experience drive the artist's work to challenging places one might not associate with the East End's beaches and bountiful reputation. Peterson's paintings are very much about the media from which they are built. Themes and concepts are part of the process, but in the end he strives for aesthetic beauty. Each piece is titled to grant the viewer a frame of reference from which to decode individual meaning– just as valid, according to the artist, as whatever it is he set out to communicate.
Patrick Dintino's work is composed of broad, blended bands of color. The inter-meshed lines in Dintino's paintings embark the viewer upon a delightful journey. His vision imagines an abstract spectrum of a particular experience.
Art, punk rock, and being a hopeless romantic are the ingredients that make up Peter Ngo's recipe for painting. Ngo's juxtaposition of imagery creates a vivid world of creatures and wonder.
Peter Levine is a sculptor who primarily works with clay. He draws inspiration from the Medieval time period, and has developed a unique, whimsical style to his work. He is also an accomplished illustrator.
Bruce Milne, an East End artist who works in both the Architectural and Photographic Arts, will have several photographs on display. Mr. Milne has a gifted eye for capturing breathtaking, panoramic views, spanning all of life's backdrops- from Long Island landscapes, to urban wastelands, to human form.
Another featured artist, Trish Franey, will be including charming, colorful paintings of creatures and characters. Franey's works have a folk art sensibility about them, leaving the viewer with a feeling of warmth and tranquility.

The Collectives Arts 4 and Bonac Tonic have currently been working together to establish a family of young artists here on the East End. In this exhibition, unique works by artists from each collective will be on display at Ashawagh Hall in Springs. The show begins on Friday, March 14th, with a Sneak Peak from 1 - 5 pm. Opening reception will be held from 5pm - 10 pm on Saturday the 15th, and will include art, merchandise, and atmosphere. The Arts4 have hosted such events as The Umbrella Show, and the Harbor Fest weekend show, The Secret Whale. Bonac Tonic has been a Springs and East Hampton staple for the past three years, putting on events such as the B.Y.O.A, Monster Mash, and various group shows at Ashawagh Hall. Their showing members include, Scott Gibbons, Carly Haffner, Grant Haffner, Elizabeth Karsch, Justin Smith, and Don Porcella. On February 23rd and 24th, 2008, the vision of both collectives was fulfilled as works were displayed at Ashawagh Hall, in their first collaborative exhibition on the South Fork. With the union of these two groups anything is possible and a new young artistic movement is born.

Dressmaker Smith Takes A New Look At Vintage Wear

Southampton - Five years ago Alissa Smith discovered the benefit of wearing her own designs in public. The young Southampton designer walked into a store called Apollo Braun on Orchard Street in Manhattan wearing an outfit she had made, and walked out with an order to make five more of the same.

“I was wearing a piece I had made and the owner loved it,” she said. He wanted to feature the sequined dress in the store, and Smith’s career as an independent designer began.

The 27-year-old native of Southampton, whose store, Smith on Nugent Street in Southampton, started sewing after taking a quilting class while in the first grade, and “would make weird bags for people” from a young age, Smith recalled. She began making her own clothing while in high school, and in college combined her love of theatre and clothing design by studying costume design at Emerson College in Boston for two years. She soon made the move to fashion design, studying at the School of Fashion Design in Boston and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

After selling her clothing line at several boutiques in Manhattan, Smith opened her store in Southampton in August of 2006. During the winter, she carries different designers, in addition to her own clothing line, while in the summer her work takes the forefront. Some of the designers featured at her store have been friends of Smith’s for years, others she has found at design fairs in the City; all are independent. The store has attracted a strong following. “Business has been really good,” Smith said. “Surprisingly even now it’s been busy.”

Smith says she draws her inspiration from the past, both in design and fabrics. Her work is “very feminine, it’s a lot of vintage fabrics, but delicate ones,” Smith said. “I’m very inspired by the 1930s and 1940s, with pastel colors, kind of dreamy.” Her theatre background also plays a role in the clothing. “I find a lot of inspiration through ballet books,” she added. “I love the whole aesthetic of ballerinas.” Smith uses vintage materials she finds at estate sales, raw silk from California and other unusual fabrics in her designs.

Smith had an internship with Betsey Johnson while in college, and considers the designer of flirty, feminine clothing as one of her touchstones. Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang are also among Smith’s favorites. Smith’s latest collection drew from the musical world, specifically the song “Cosmia” by singer Joanna Newsom, which Smith described as a “lulling melody” on which she based her designs.

Smith makes all of her clothes, and said her aesthetic is influenced by
designs from the 1930s and 1940s.

Smith makes all of her clothes by hand, custom designing outfits as well as creating two lines of looks for the summer and winter seasons. A custom-designed dress generally takes one to two weeks to make, and Smith helps lead her clients in the right direction, melding her vision with theirs. “It’s a collaboration between me and the customer,” she said. “I like the one-on-one work with the them.”

In a community that relies heavily on the summer clientèle, Smith said her customers include many locals. “It is a really great, strong local following, which I didn’t expect at all,” she said. Her regulars include local high school students, and, Smith said, “It’s awesome that they can appreciate things that I do - things hand done.”

In addition to her regular line, Smith plans to focus on a line of wedding dresses for the near future, with four made and a fifth in the works. She plans to remain independent, and likes to work with others of the same mindset. “Everyone is doing it themselves, and nothing is mass produced,” she explained. “There is no middle person.”

Arts Provide a Tonic for Young Painters and Sculptors

East Hampton - Tonic: “Anything invigorating, physically, mentally or morally.” Arts: “The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.”

In the spirit of the two definitions, two groups of young artists have joined together to create art collectives “so the pure joy of the arts can be shared by everyone,” Bethany Peters, the founder of the Sag Harbor-based Arts4 collective, commented. Together with Bonac Tonic, an East Hampton-based group of artists, Arts4 have been mounting shows across the East End featuring the diverse works of their members and other area artists. On Feb. 23 a show called “Arts4 Bonac Tonic” will be held at Ashawagh Hall in Springs. “It’s going to be a huge show,” reported Grant Haffner, one of the founders of Bonac Tonic, featuring “all young talent.”

The process of breaking into the art scene started three years ago for Bonac Tonic. Its eight members were intent on answering the question “How does a young talent get exposure?” Haffner recounted. “I went to galleries and no one took me seriously,” he explained. As the group hosts more shows, many at Ashawagh Hall, Haffner admitted “We’re getting better, and we’re getting more confident about putting our art up on the walls,” he said.

When Bonac Tonic first started mounting shows, “It came down to ‘Whoever wants to do this, give me a call,’” Haffner said. “Once you get the ball rolling people really start to get interested.”

Now that the group’s artists are getting more exposure. “It’s more about putting up awesome art,” Haffner explained. The art produced by Bonac Tonic’s members ranges from landscape paintings to photography and sculpture. “It really is everything,” said Haffner, whose specialty is acrylic landscapes. The group is seeking to expand into other mediums, including featuring live bands, comedians, and performance pieces at future shows. “There’s definitely room to grow,” Haffner noted.

Arts4
Like Bonac Tonic, Arts4, founded in early 2007, is not limited solely to the visual arts. Poets, fiction writers, filmmakers, and musicians participate in its exhibitions; the group has 15 core members and another 25 who participate on an occasional basis. “When we host our own shows, we try to include as many people as possible,” said Peters, who works mostly in printmaking. Their wide-ranging appeal has drawn some large crowds, including a show during Harborfest in Sag Harbor in October that attracted more than 300 people. While many of the artists featured in Arts4 exhibitions tend to be young, the group tries to involve as many artists as possible. “It’s important to me that we’re non-exclusive,” Peters said. The focus is on collaboration, and according to the group’s mission, “working collaboratively has allowed for the cross-combination of creative minds and disciplines, and for the cross-fertilization of ideas and approaches.”

The two artists’ collectives are in the midst of a busy period of openings and shows. On Feb. 9 Bonic Tonic and Arts4 joined together for the opening of a show at Clovis Point Vineyard in Jamesport, that will run through May 9. “It was great,” Peters said. “We had a very good crowd, lots of art and wine enthusiasts alike. I saw a lot of unfamiliar faces, which is good because it means people are coming because of our name.”

“I was really proud of the body of work shown,” she said.

On March 15, Bonic Tonic will host the Bonac Tonic Invitational titled “Whatever They Told Me Never Happened” at Ashawagh Hall. The sheer numbers of opportunities that have come Bonac Tonic’s way have surprised Haffner. “It’s been incredible,” he said. “I would never imagine that I would be this busy.”

While members have sold some of their works at the shows, the intent of both Bonac Tonic and Arts4 is to give its artists a chance to develop an audience for their work. “We’re just trying to have a good time, where you get to meet people and talk about your art,” Haffner explained. “I would love to see it as a living breathing creature that continues to grow.”

Sag Harbor and the Springs of East Hampton have long been associated with important artistic movements, including abstract expressionism seen in the works of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollack - two of the most celebrated artists who painted in Accabonac and displayed their artistic achievements at Ashawagh Hall in Springs.

This weekend, at the same venue, a new generation of Sag Harbor and East Hampton artists hopes to continue the tradition of an East End arts culture by combing their talents in one show that will showcase the works of many who are just finding footing locally in the art world.

The show, Arts 4 Bonac Tonic combines two arts collectives - Sag Harbor's Arts 4 Collective and Bonac Tonic, a three-year old arts collective started by a group of East Hampton artists.

"The whole thing about art is you just have to do it," said Bonac Tonic founding member Grant Haffner, who grew up in Springs and returned to the East End to continue his craft after several attempts in professional art school proved uninspiring.

In July 2005, joining creative forces with his twin sister Carly, as well as Scott Gibbons, Don Porchella, Justin Smith, Gary Lovelace, Elizabeth Karsch, Alicia Gibson and Ben McHugh, Bonac Tonic was founded, named after the nickname for Hampton Dairy Iced Tea, but also said Haffner, the ability art has to cleanse the soul.

"It's about us being Bonackers," he said, "But also a tonic. Come and get your art elixir."

During Bonac Tonic's first show, Haffner sold eight paintings, four to Lisa de Kooning, granddaughter of Willem. The rest of the crew found success as well, fueling the concept that collectively they could break into the art scene more quickly, rather than separately.

Besides, said Haffner, "it's more fun with friends," and the collective provides its members invaluable critiques so the group is in a constant state of evolution and education.

"It was more about unearthing something friends to do together," said Haffner. "It just kind of grew. We did the shows and it was so much fun. Something in the formula just worked and built itself."

In November, instead of asking the community to B.Y.O.B. to an Ashwagh Hall art event, the collective asked the community to B.Y.O.A. - Bring Your Own Art - a forum designed to bring artists of all ages, mediums and skill together to show their work collectively.

It was this show, said Haffner, that brought the members of the Sag Harbor-based Arts 4 Collective and Bonac Tonic together, forging a personal and professional bond between the two groups - and a common goal to see the youth of the East End emerge as a force in the local art world.

Creating a larger collective between two groups emerged naturally, first with a joint exhibition titled "Clovis Point Toasts the Artists" at the Clovis Point Winery in Jamesport, which opened on February 9 and now for this weekend's "Art 4 Bonac Tonic," which will open Saturday, February 23 with a reception from 5 to 10 p.m. at Ashawagh Hall on Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton and continue on Sunday with gallery hours from noon to 5 p.m.

Arts4Collective, while a separate entity, evolved much in the same fashion as Bonac Tonic, with a group of Sag Harbor artists, many of whom grew up together, reuniting with the same artistic goals in mind.

Sag Harbor native Bethany Peters thought about the concept while at art school in Halifax where "a hundred of these kind of things exist" and it was the kind of movement perfect for an artsy community like Sag Harbor.

"It's funny how, in hindsight, we all did our own thing, but then came back and did this show and it all came together" said Arts 4 Collective member Molly Weiss, a Sag Harbor resident and painter in the collective.

"The Umbrella Show," the collective's inaugural exhibition, held Memorial Day Weekend at the Stella Maris Regional School featured the collective's philosophy - that art is all-inclusive, encompassing everything from creative writing to music to all forms of visual art.

"The idea of doing this collaboratively - with more heads together, more hearts together and an idea seemed right," said Peters of The Umbrella Show. "It's nice to be a part of a team. So we formed the collective and then the people who stuck around kept getting together, coming up with ideas."

The Arts 4 Collective strives to support contemporary artists, whether charter members or those on a more revolving basis. According to Weiss and Peters, the group sees all artists - whether visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, craftsmen, inventors, thespians and beyond, as members of the greater artistic community.

Outside of Weiss and Peters, members include Hunter Herrick, Marshall Moran, Ashley Gardiner, Danielle Lobosco, Ashley Hildreth, Sara Marchese, Jacqueline Dowling, Kein Ziemciewicz, Matthew Brophy, Laura Miller and Elliot Wandel, many who will show this weekend at Ashawagh Hall.

After The Umbrella Show, Arts 4 Collective found even greater success with a standing room only crowd at The Secret Whale show held during HarborFest weekend. Featuring artwork and musicians, Weiss remembers the event drawing residents, tourists, young and old - a testament to the all-ages philosophy they have about art.

But despite that success, it was Linda Capello's suggestion they get in touch with Bonac Tonic that gave the group legs - creating a "powerhouse" union that helped land shows like the Clovis exhibition and the Love & Passion show at Guild Hall.

"It's still a work in progress, there is more to do," said Weiss. "But that is half the fun of being an artist."

"I would like to see us all gain more members," said Haffner. "This can be a living, breathing thing. I would like to see it eventually as something that keeps feeding the community."

Arts 4 Bonac Tonic will open with a reception at Ashawagh Hall on Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton on Saturday, February 23 and run through Sunday, February 24.

Art Looks at Love from Both Sides Now

Gerri Giliberti’s “I Love” will hang in the “Love & Passion” show on view at Ashawagh Hall this weekend. Had your fill of roses and romance, or are you looking for more of both? Whatever your answer, passion and love will be highlighted this weekend at Ashawagh Hall in Springs. The third annual “Love & Passion Art Show” is the largest to date tackling these thorny topics, with almost 75 artists submitting paintings, sculpture or photography that expresses a particular perspective on love or passion. So far, passion is ahead by a landslide.
“I’m seeing more passion than love,” said curator and artist Karyn Mannix. “Passion can be anything. It could be about war, race cars or whatever the person is passionate about.”
Another thing that’s evident is that viewers will be hard-pressed to find red heart clichés among the artwork. What will be seen is a diverse presentation that runs from tenderness between pandas to raw spray painted emotions on brick walls. A solitary pregnant woman stretched out and portrayed in bronze is part of the show. So is a cartoon woman gone mad with an axe.
Most of the artists live and work in the Hamptons. They include Abby Abrams, Dennis Leri, Kathleen Bifulco, Trish
Franey, Gerri Giliberti. Christa Maiwald, Alex Vignoli and Linda and John Capello. Ruby Jackson, T. Herndon Kennedy, Lisa Kiss, Ruth Nasca, Maria Pessino, Frank Sofo and a host of others are among the local artists exhibiting work in the show. Members of area arts collectives Bonac Tonic and Arts 4 are represented. So are artists who live farther afield. Artists from New Orleans, Chicago, California, Texas and other states are shipping their art to be part of the show.
While the artwork takes center stage, the event is also a fund-raiser for Ashawagh Hall. Staying true to theme, there will be several “sex kittens” dressed like 1920s cigarette girls enticing the crowd to buy raffle tickets benefiting the venue. Straight-up donations will also be accepted at the two-day art show. Part of the proceeds from art sales will be donated to defray the costs of last year’s renovation of the hall.
The renovation project carried a total price tag of $240,000. Around $97,000 has been raised through private donations, leaving $143,000 of a $150,000 loan still to be repaid, according to Vito Sisti, as relayed through Ms. Mannix. The cost to rent the hall for art shows and events has increased but private donations are an important part of the plan to satisfy the debt.
Love & Passion is quickly becoming an area tradition for Valentine’s Day. This year, artists responded en masse to the open call.
“The response is outrageous,” Ms. Mannix said. “People really want to be part of the show.”
The first Love & Passion was curated by Ms. Mannix at @Pebbles, an alternate space in a vacant East Hampton shop. Last year, she teamed up with Mr. Sisti to bring Love & Passion to Cellar, a Southampton wine shop. This year, the show was moved to Ashawagh Hall with Mr. Sisti assisting Ms. Mannix with the show.
It made sense to bring the exhibition back to East Hampton, and to Ashwagh Hall in particular, for several reasons, Ms. Mannix said. She recently took over the duties of longtime Ashawagh Hall Art Chair Abby Abrams. When she realized the weekend wasn’t claimed, Ms. Mannix rented the space for the show. She pointed out that Ashawagh Hall has an expansive space where plenty of artists can participate—more than alternate spaces can typically allow.
Love & Passion is just a fun show to present around Valentine’s Day. Artists can either go with the romantic flow or react against it as they wish. The opening provides a perfect excuse to see what fellow artists have been up to and to get out and socialize.
“This is a big community meeting place,” Ms. Mannix said. “Openings get packed—especially with group shows. It seemed a great opportunity to do something fun in February and raise some money for Ashawagh Hall.”
The Love & Passion Art Show 3 will be held at Ashawagh Hall, 780 Fireplace Road, Springs, on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. An opening reception will be held on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each or five for$20.

Arts 4 Spotlight on: DYLAN CONNOR

We at Arts 4 are big fans of the rockin and talented musician/artist Dylan Connor.

Dylan Connor has just surfaced from recording a new power pop EP with producer Bryce Goggin (Spacehog, Lemonheads, Phish, Nada Surf, Ramones). Three of those songs can only be heard here on myspace prior to the official release. Dylan writes in the tradition of Neil Young and Bob Dylan, while drawing inspiration from current craftsmen like Morrissey, Nada Surf, and Ben Folds. In 2004, Dylan recorded a solo acoustic CD titled "Plug In" with Bryce Goggin. He toured relentlessly in support of the record at clubs, colleges and cafes up and down both coasts. That year Iris Distribution made Dylan's songs available on I-tunes, Napster, and most other digital outlets. In March of 2007, American Songwriter Magazine awarded Dylan's song "Love's an Infection" a prize for songwriting. The song is featured in the current March and April issue on sale at Border's, Tower, and Barnes and Noble. Dylan is looking for the right label to release his new EP and is planning a six week East and West coast tour for the summer.
